New "sticky" 4-way mode in Mame Beta14

I notice there's a new "sticky" 4-way mode for 8-way joysticks in the latest version of mame, and I remember that someone here mentioned they had worked out how to implement it a few weeks back and that they would pass it onto the Mame team.
Would this the first suggestion from the arcadecontrols.com message board that's actually made it into the Mame source code? :->
