They are very rare. There's only been two or three in MAME's four year life. MAME is constantly being worked on, so it'll always be in beta. However, all the beta's are official.

It's impossible to say when the next non-beta release will be. Only Nicola decides when and I bet he doesn't even have an idea of when it'll happen.

When the planets are next aligned properly.
