Mame gives error: SIGENV

I'm trying to run Mame in DOS (win 95 booting to dos). When I run Mame with any ROM, it continually scrolls a message on the screen.

The message is like a stack dump with some registers, and says that the program ended with SIGENV (or something very close to that. Its scrolling fast and is hard to read).

No config.sys, No autoexec, soundblaster card. Ideas?
