There are some people who started with a keyboard hack out of necessity, and in subsequent projects quickly switched to an encoder for much greater convenience. Hindsight may be an even better seller for Hagstrom and I-Pac than you think.

No, it's not the same concept. It's more like if you have trouble keeping your Ford Tempo or Mercury Topaz in working shape (had a fuel line cut-out yet? Ask my wife), then having a friend recommend you get a Honda Civic. Like Clorets, they may cost a little more, but (in many people's opinion) they're worth it.
