Help: Mame32 Assault Control problem!

I just want to know if anyone's having the same
problem as I am: I recently found an old Sega
tank control (really nice, two ascii sticks with
microswitches, finger and thumb buttons on each
stick) and wired a cheap usb 'rumblepad' to it.
That was easy, and everything checks out in the
Game Controllers Properties, yet when I play
Assault with it I have the following problem:

After firing a nuke, I press inwards to get back
on the ground quickly, I then want to move
forward but when I put the joysticks up, nothing
happens. I tried the same combination many
times under the Game Controllers Properties box,
and there doesn't seem to be a problem with the
joystick outputs.

I wish I could be more certain that this is a
bug in mame, but it's hard because of the nature
of the problem.

Hey, now that I think about it, maybe the Assault
hardware uses 4-way joysticks, explaining why
diagonals are giving such problems.

Anyone?

Thanks,

Des
