Apparently Assault I used 8-ways, Assault Plus
used 4 ways. It just occured to me now that
I should load up Robotron to see if the joystick
input is being handled properly...

: Can't help you fix your current situation, sorry. I can only outline to you that I use a PSX Dual Shock compatible pad, connected via USB adaptor. In Mame32, it was quite easy to configure the two thumbsticks to work like those on Assault.
