I loaded univbe.exe (SDD 653), vbe.com (AdvanceCAB) and Windows detected a new hardware available and it used the BIOS VESA calls to setup the video mode.

I used a S3 virge card.

I found that Windows detects the 8 and 15 bits modes of size 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024. Any other size is ignored (at least in the "Display Properties").
The 15 bits modes are used as "HiColor 16 bit", the true 16 bits modes are ignored.

I agree with you that this is strange. What I think is that Windows detects a change in the
VESA info and start using a generic VESA driver.
