What wire gauge needed?

Hi there,

I'm seriously considering making a controller for a playstation and I still need some more information before I can start.

What gauge wire should I be using? I read on another site that a person had used telephone wire, but I'm skeptical about it's reliability. In a matter of personal preference, I would rather use proper electrical wires, not telephone ones.

Can someone please provide some suggestions?
