Stupid question - Minimum requirements

OK, sorry if this is a stupid question. Anyway, I'm a Mac user, (my computer is mainly for graphic design, not gaming) but I'm looking to buy a seperate computer, (probably used) to be dedicated for emulation, and eventually be put into a MAME cabinet.

Anyway, it'll most likely be a used PC by the looks of things, (I know a place going out of business and selling all of theirs) but I know absolutely nothing about PCs. (Well, I'm comfortable running DOS and Windows, I just don't know a thing about PC hardware and hardware requirements)

What are the minimum requirements you think I should be looking for to run MAME and what not? Is it worth it to get a nice new fancy computer? Mostly I'll be using it for older titles, (probably a lot of Joust), but I'd also love to be able to play Neo Geo titles too. (Does the DOS MAME do a better job with Neo Geo stuff, or should I look for a Neo Geo emulator?)

Any help here would be appreciated...
