How do you adjust the Hz the monitor is running at? I have no clue if mine is set right...

Whenever I set some games (Simpsons comes to mind) to 800x600 the game screen actually gets smaller than when set to auto size. It fits good on auto, but takes less than 1/2 the screen when I try to set it...any ideas or is this normal?
