: I'm looking to setup M.A.M.E. on my PC so I can practice certain classic games for a tournament next year. I have even gone through the trouble of finding and purchasing actual arcade game control panels, and a half dozen Microsoft Sidewinders to hack for this purpose.

: I'm hearing that speed(or lack thereof) is an issue when playing M.A.M.E. games on the Windows platform(which is what I think I'll be limited to since I'll be using the Sidewinder PCBs). But since I'll only be playing the classics(ie; Millipede, Joust, Choplifter, Asteroids, Gunsmoke), will this really be an issue in my case?

Probably not! I have a Pentium 200 MMX with 48 Meg Ram and have no problem playing those games. MAME32 is generally slower than DOS MAME. DOS MAME in a windows box (which I use and would recommend) is slightly (barely noticeable) slower than DOS MAME in pure DOS. To see if speed is an issue, run the game with -frameskip 0 and press F11 If it shows 100% in the top right, speed is no problem. If not, you can increase the framskip to increase speed with very little loss in performance.

Will the games play exactly the same as the actual arcade games?

As far as game action and response, absolutely, MAME uses the actual game ROMS. As far as feel, that depends on the quality of your controls and the interface method. That's why this site's here.

My system is a 450Mhz Pentium 2, with 128mb, and an ATI All-In-Wonder Pro 8megs(PCI).

: Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated(along with recommendations for a M.A.M.E. version and front end for my purpose).

I use arcade@home and DOS MAME in a Windows DOS Box

: Thanks a lot.
