Darren,

I pretty much agree with what Tiger-Heli had to say.

In my opinion whether you get the Hagstrom encoder or the IPAC doesn't make too much difference. I prefer the Hagstrom because that's what I use, I can order it from the US, the product works great, and you can get it with the trackball/spinner interface on the same board (KE-72). I haven't tried the IPAC but it's less expensive and from what people on the message board have said I'm sure it's a great encoder...I might try one on my next project.

The Sidewinders would truly be a pain in the @$$ to hack ( in my humble opinion ) and you still would need some kind of interface for the trackball and spinners. Since you've already gone to the trouble of getting the original control panels, you should really do yourself a favor and pick up a quality encoder...you'll thank yourself in the end.

Tiger-Heli's advice about interfacing the panels is dead-on. I would use a harddrive ribbon cable ( plugs directly onto the Hagstrom board, don't know about the IPAC ) to interface the different
panels and make it so you can plug the panels in and out of the same encoder. With the Hagstrom's 72 inputs you might be able to have them all plugged in at once ( another option ).

As for DOS vs. Mame32 I would go with Mame32 for ease of use. It has a decent easy to set up interface and for the older games on your computer they will play at full speed with no hitches.

Good luck with your project...no matter what route you take you have some fun soldering ahead of you!
It WILL be worth it though!!

E-mail if you have any more questions...MameMole

: MameMole,

: I know nothing about these keyboard encoders.(I'm assuming you were referring to the Hagstrom KE18?). But if the sidewinders I already have will allow me to run the games exactly the same as the actual arcade versions, then would there be any advantage in pure DOS?

: Also, two of the control panels I have are the original "Millipede" and "Star Trek" CPs. Will there be any issue I need to concern myself with since they have a trackball and a spinner?

:
: Tiger-Heli,

: Since I'm a total newbie. Would you still recommend arcade@home and DOS MAME in a Windows DOS Box as my best options?

: Thanks a lot.
