Speaker "noise" when vol. turned up high??

I got a set of computer speakers for my cabinet and I was testing them out to see how they sound and when I turned the volume up high I'm getting a kind of staticy sound from the speakers. I tested two sets and they both do it. Is there a way to eliminate this, besides turning the vol. down. :) Is it because the speakers aren't that big or what? Thanks!
