I had this same problem with a nice set of Altec Lansing speakers. Turns out I had them plugged into the speaker out .....( bear with me here)
The speaker out plug is amplified...the line out plug is not. When I plugged the Altecs into the line out plug they sounded great.
I think it just depends on how powerful you amp in your speakers is...if it is high power then you want to use the line out jack.
