4 1/2 trackballs are like mini bowling balls ! : ) The first time I saw them, I thought Wow, thats cool. But after trying to roll them, I thought... Ugg that sux. (atari xo football)

They are too heavy, and you cant change direction fast enough.

Most classics like centipede, use the 2 1/2 trackball. They also spin a lot faster than the larger ones, as the bearings have less surface area, weight, and overall friction.

Also note the position of the bearings on the larger trackballs... they are more twords the sides instead of near the bottom. This adds more weight on the bearings - thus more friction... resulting in less 'free spin'.

Bigger is not really better in this area.
