Ideal control question

Hi, I am in the process of designing a few different control panel layouts for a MAME machine. I would like to know what you would consider an "ideal" layout for this machine assuming for now, that money is no object. I would like to come up with like 3 or 4 layouts. (i.e. One for Ikari Warriors style games, one for Pac Man style, One for trackball style, etc). If you can, please be specific with the type of joystick, etc. (like Happs super for example). Thanks a lot for your help, and when I have finished all my research, I will set up a site with instructions, part numbers, cost, etc. I would like these 3 or 4 layouts to cover 98% of the games as accurately as possible to the original arcade machine.
