Once set up properly, you CAN'T use Up/Down/Left and right to play. You must use Up+Right, Down+left, Up+left, Down+right to play. It doesn't accept any other positions.
I, having a dual stick panel like most people here, have the left control set default, and the right stick set to diagonals only, just in case.
