Optical Gun Games, arcade hardware and MAME?

I just picked up my two freebee Lethal Enforcers cabinets. One is in pretty good condition but the other one needs some renovation. I was thinking about keeping the good one as an original JAMMA cabinet (maybe change the PCB to some other light gun game) and Mameing the other one.

So here are some light gun related questions (yes I know there has been several before but I didn’t read them in detail since I didn’t have any optical guns at that time. And yes I have searched and read the board and archived messages already but I still have questions):

The first question is obvious, is it possible to use optical guns with MAME? This has been asked before but I want a specific answer to the question if it is possible using my original arcade optical gun (no PC or PSX etc.) and my arcade monitor (not PC monitor or TV etc.) with MAME?

The next one is where can I find information about solution’s and similar projects (if any)?

The last one is if anyone could recommend the best (playability) classical (not Virtua Cop, House Of the Dead, Time Crisis etc.) arcade game (preferable JAMMA) supporting optical guns?
