If the game MUST use the mouse to aim...how about if we could somehow do a flight yoke type mount for a gun. That would mean no free guns to hold onto, it would be more like a rifle type thing permanently mounted on a stand, but if you could attach an X and Y axis setup like a flight yoke, you would be able to track the gun's pivot and rotation and the mouse cursor in MAME would track the gun's motion. Of cousre it's like having a cheat with still being able to see the mouse cursor in MAME, but if that could be disabled, that might work, and it would mean you don't really need to come up with any fancy optics interfacing for the gun, just wire the trigger and connect the x-y axes to the mouse, which mame is all set to use anyway, and figure out how to turn off the cursor to make it legitimate targeting with the gun.

The only small 2 issues are, of cousre, again no free moving handguns, they'd be fixed to the control panel and you just pivot them, and the other thing, the games start out with the cursor in the center of the screen, so if you manually are holding the gun way to the left and then the game starts, you're already at extreme left and the cursor is centered, so if you wanna go left some more, you can't until you go right quickly (mouse acceleration) and then start going left slowly...typical mouse on the edge of the screen stuff...but that's another worry.
