I have heard of people setting up normal video cards (matrox milliniums) at the right frequency in windows to one specific resolution, but everything will look wacky in dos mode. I have never had any luck using fixed frequency monitors on anything but fixed frequency cards.

I agree, most fixed frequency monitors are not made to work at low resolutions.
You will likely have trouble getting it to sync full screen at less than 640x480 w/o extra hardware.
