To get a nice finish the key is sanding between coats. If your surface is a little rough to start you might want to start with a heavy primer. Then in between coats you want to sand with pretty much the finest sand paper you can find. After 3 coats it should look pretty nice. Then you may want to stick a eurethane clear coat on top again you will need about 3 coats and need to sand in between. I recommmend using a water based eurathane as it dries a lot faster. If you have time use oil based it will look better but take you several days to apply. Again I can't stress it enough sanding it well is the key and make sure you wipe the dust off good before applying another coat.
