Laminate on Cabinet - what is it ?

I've got a cabinet which has some damage to the laminate on the sides. I thought it was formica but now im not sure. It is black and has a long wood grain. It appears to be very thing, about the thickness of an egg shell, however it is very tough unless caught on the edge when it seems britle.

I would like to repair it but im not sure if I can get it off the wood, which is soft chipboard.

Any advice on the way forward would be great, I don't really want to paint it black because I like the wood effect that is already on there.
