I just did my cab with laminate. Here's the deal. Laminate is about 1/16" thick and will not show any surface texture from the material underneath - in other words, you will lose your wood grain. It is very stiff, and has a colored layor on top of a reconstitued wood product layer. Laminate is the same as Formica. Around here there were three brands I could easily get my hands on - Formica, WilsonArt Laminate and Nevamar Laminate. I went with Nevamar because it was the cheapest, and it looks great. It's very even and solid and clean looking. It will be an excellent backdrop for the side art I eventually plan to add. It isn't cheap, even if you get the cheap stuff. I think the cheapest I found it was about $40 per sheet (total $80) for stock sheets at Home Depot or Lowes. Those colors are generally countertop-looking ones, and you don't want your cab looking like a kitchen counter.

Hope some of that helps.

: I've got a cabinet which has some damage to the laminate on the sides. I thought it was formica but now im not sure. It is black and has a long wood grain. It appears to be very thing, about the thickness of an egg shell, however it is very tough unless caught on the edge when it seems britle.

: I would like to repair it but im not sure if I can get it off the wood, which is soft chipboard.

: Any advice on the way forward would be great, I don't really want to paint it black because I like the wood effect that is already on there.
