what if you could put some kind of sprocket under the joystick, and have two micro switches that would be turned on and off as the joystick rotates.
you would have to use the switches that are used in coin doors (the kind that switch from the side with the wire) as the teeth of the sprocket kit the wire they would trip the switch.

this diagram isnt very good but you get the idea. one switch is pointed so tha hen the sprocket is turned to the right it trips the sitch and the other is reversed.
