An 8 way stick will move basically in a circle. A 4 way will feel more like a diamond, eliminating the diagonals. The problem with a joystick that does not block diamonds, regardless of whether its set to 8 way or 4 way is the speed and precision in hitting the 4 points (up, right, down, left). With no restrictor plate you can not move from point A to point B (I.E. Up to Right) efficiently.
