Real 4-way sticks are restricted. They have a plate either in front of the switches or behind, which limits movements in the diagonals. All the original sticks for games such as Pacman has this.
The sticks such as the Happ super, which, when set to "4-way" setting, do not restrict the movement and are therefore NOT a real 4-way stick. Changing the actuator so that is cannot make 2 switches at once does not have much effect in MAME anyway.
Donkey kong is a good example of a game which is very difficult to play on an unrestricted joystick. Oscar's plates are an excellent solution to this and should emulate a real 4-way stick.

: Ideally you want your 4-way stick to move completely freely but only register 4 directions (just like real arcade games). For instance Donkey Kong does not have "restrictor plates", it "feels" the same as an 8-way, it just registers only the 4-ways. So the plates are nice but its not exactly the same as a true 4-way.

: : Some 8way sticks that adjust to 4way have a removable restictor plate on the back, the problem is you have to disassemble the whole stick to change it. Most 8way sticks that claim to change to 4way keep 2 switches from being pushed at the same time but they don't restrict the actual movement of the stick.
