Reassigning optical controls in MAME ??

Does anyone know how to reassign the optical direction controls in MAME, the way you can reassign different keys / buttons.

I don't mean just swapping left and right (can use reverse option), but I mean can you make "up" with the trackball = left on screen, if say, you've mounted a trackball sideways ?

I tried going to the CONTROLS THIS GAME menu, went down to selection, pressed but it doesn't read the input when you move the mouse/trackball so no reassignment takes place.
