I think the main problem you are going to have is making them sturdy enough for game play. I use multiple panels for my game that attched using the same latches that the origional on that came in my cab used. This means that the panels are just as secure and strong as the origional. If your friends are anything like mine when the game play gets competetive it's a good thing to have everything as stable as possible. The only draw back to having multiple panels vs. your idea of modules is the fact that I need more room to store my panels and I also have to have more parts, because I have 8 way joys in more than one panel and so on.

Depending on how you have the controlls interfaced, hot swapping shouldn't be a problem. I have a keyboard hack that stays in the cab and the panels connect to it with an Amphenol cable. This way the computer only sees the hack and you can hot swap the panels. I haven't built a trackball panel yet, but I plan on having a mouse hack stay inside the cab, so when the comuter boots up it sees the mouse, then during game play you could plug in the trackball panel and use it as well.

: I was wondering what people thought of this: I've been thinking about a modular control panel (CP) design where joysticks, buttons, trackballs, and spinners would be interchangeable individually, as opposed to an all-in-one design, or even a design with several different control panels, like a fighting stick panel, trackball panel, etc.
