JP4 must be using an older copy of Mame. The current Mame uses keys 1-4 for player starts(ply1-ply4) and keys 5-8 for player coins (ply1-ply4). One other word of advise I have heard a lot from people is to buy the button wrench (~$2). It makes tightening and untightening the buttons MUCH easier (especially if your buttons are too close to get other tools in there).
