I used a sidewinder for one half of my controls in my cabinet and I find it works better than the keyboard hack I used for the second player controls. For example, in sf2 I can pull off fireballs and dragon punch much easier with the sidewinder.
The secret to using sidewinders is to use them in digital mode and unload all the drivers and forget about using the profiler. The windows drivers and profiler have far to much overhead to be used especially on slower pcs. The amount of cpu cycles to read a sidewinder in digital mode is much less than a standard joystick.
