How many encoder inputs are really nessecery?

Since I started developing my keyboard encoder, I´ve just
tried to get as many inputs as possible from my microprocessor.

But how many is really needed??

At the moment im getting 64 out of it, but 32 is perhaps enough.

btw. did i spell nessecery correct ??
