IF you don't have a cable that allows the hood to be opened one of the easiest ways to 'trace' the wires is to use a light or a continuitly tester.

First off.... on the end with the connector still in place.... look at the surface that the pins go thru. Next to each pin you will see a tiny number. These are the number of the pins on that end of the cable. NExt, get like a 5 or 12 volt DC light that you attach to a 5 or 12 volt power source on one end. Attach the other end to a pin or strip the end. Then pick a wire in the cable and attach the stripped end to ground. Then touch the different pins on the connector of the cable with the other end of the light. When it lights up... that is the wire for that pin. Mark the wire and then proceed to check all the wires.

An ohmmeter or the like can work too.

Hope that helps.

: Nobody explained how they did this. I have my cut vga cable and now I have a 15-pin connector at one end and wires at the other. How do I figure out which wires go with which pins. The only thing I can figure out is if I knew what color wire went with what pin #. There is no way to trace the wires to the pins without destroying the wire completely. I don't really want to do that. SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!
