:One question about an 8-way stick - Can it be wired with switches so that you can manually put the stick in 8,4,and 2 way modes? Or will a keyboard encoder ensure that a 8 way stick will not mess up a game intended for a 2 or 4 game stick?

No, the problem with 2,4 & 8 way sticks is the physical movement, not the switches controlling direction. If you use an 8 way stick for a 2 or 4 way game, even if the diagonals were disabled, if you accidentally go in the diagonal direction it causes problems (like needing to move up quickly only to find you've went diagonally and are now dead). If you want 2 or 4 way sticks, I strongly suggest you put in dedicated units

:I'd like to run the wheel and Ball to the mouseport (guess I have to) and have them on some kind of switch that will select which one to use. Is this doable? I'd assume so.

Sure, it's do-able. I have optical/rotary joysticks, spinner, trackball & Star Wars yoke all hooked to my interface via a cannibalized ABCD printer switch. If you get your trackball from Happ, you have a choice of either a serial interface, or they offer a USB version so you don't need to clog a serial port. If you use DOS MAME, the USB may be flaky - be forewarned! Or, if you were getting a good Hagstrom keyboard encoder anyway, you can get a KE-72 with a Happ-compatable interface built in!

:(I guess that Monaco GP game does for more than one racer, huh?

Actually, Monaco GP will likely never be in MAME as it had no real ROMs. But, there is work being done on a stand-alone emulator which you can find at www.vintagegaming.com

:I'd even consider putting in 2 pedals for some racing games. Is that too much to set up?

I'm doing the same thing

:I was thinking of trying to get a fast PII or K6.

I have a PII-400 and it's only a bit slow on the newest and biggest of games, so the newer P-III's & K7's should be super!

:Are there motherboards out there that were made for this kind of thing?

Not that I'm aware of.

Your hysteria reminds me of mine when I first discovered this wonderful addiction - have fun!!!
