I've done the same thing, but the settings are persistant. I believe they are stored in the mame.cfg file. Mine was read only after copying it from a CD and I had to change the attributes.

: When I remap keys in MAME under Input(general)its not keeping the keys I've mapped. I'm remapping the credit key back to 3 so I don't have to wire it dif in my keyboard hack. Is there anyway to make this stick?
