USB Controller in DOS MAME?

I just read at arcade@home that Tim just got the USB rig and trackball from Happs. What puzzled me is that he said he was going to test it on the DOS Version of MAME? I've used a GamePad Pro USB with MAME32 and it works lovely, but how do you get DOS MAME to use USB? I didn't think it was possible.

I was happy today when I found a DOS MAME compiled with GrIP support for my exterminator, this would be more good news.
