I just realized you can just hit tab and remap the input coin and start game buttons in mame to anything you want. For some reason I thought you could only remap the actual gameplay buttons (p1 button 1, p1 button 2 etc.) I've been using MAME for years now and (I don't know why but...) always thought the insert coin function was "hard-wired" (or "hard-coded") to keys 3-4 and start to keys 1-2. What a lame brain!!

Well, since that's the case I see no reason to mess with an encoder or keyboard hack when the USB interface is so easy to set up. (my pII 450 runs MAME32 plenty fast) The only downside is the time delay between MAME releases and MAME32 releases (MAME32 .36b2 is still nowhere to be found as of this writing). Also, Thomas Thonérfelth's encoder sounds tempting. I guess I'll wait and see.

Also I bet you could use the USB interface in a dos box on top of windows for use with MAME. Of course this does not help all you people using real arcade monitors running in true DOS.
