Welp, My experience...

I bought 2 Happ Ultimate joysticks with a nice and cool yellow knob. Pretty looking suckers but they are VERY loose. Unless your used to the old arcades with the joysticks that have had the springs beaten into submission, you wont like them much. So then I got 2 Competitions Pro's and 2 Super's. Both with the normall springs, as LuSiD has them with the hard springs and it's a bitch to get the special moves in Street Fighter and the likes to work. I put in the Super with the 8-way actuator and the competition is 8-way also. They both feel identicall to em so far like this. Pacman played pretty good, but NOT perfect. Note that if ya flip the actuator over to 4-way it's perfect. If you have a control panel held in place by Velcro and a small flat jewlers screw driver, you can flip the actuator in 20 seconds with practice wich is what I do know, so I have the best of both worlds. Only pity is Supers only have black knobs. Hope this helps ya. I personally would go for 2 Supers and just flip the actuator as needed (what I am doing now)

: I am considering building my own arcade joystick control panel
: and would like some advice on 8-way vs. 4-way joysticks.
: I play both Pac-Man and Frogger, and also, Tiger Heli and
: Twin Cobra, among others and would like advice on the tradeoffs
: and which will work better overall.
: TIA,
: Marshall
