8-way vs. 4-way joysticks

I am considering building my own arcade joystick control panel
and would like some advice on 8-way vs. 4-way joysticks.
I play both Pac-Man and Frogger, and also, Tiger Heli and
Twin Cobra, among others and would like advice on the tradeoffs
and which will work better overall.
