I had the same problem. I tried diodes too, which did
not prevent key blocking. The most I ever got out of a
keyboard hack without blocking was 6 simultaneous inputs
(when the joystick is held diagonal while holding down
four buttons). For me, the keyboard hack wasn't worth
the time I spent on it. If you're a cheapskate like me,
I would suggest hacking some Nintendo controllers and
using Direct Pad Pro. I bought 2 controllers for $1 each
at Funcoland and connected them both to the parallel port.
It works really well because you can connect four buttons
for each controller using A, B, select, and start.
