$40 a gallon sounds like a decent price for a specialty paint product. some car paints run more than $100 a gallon.

cheap alternative: put don a coat of varnish, and stick your graphics to it while it's still wet. after it dries, put down 4 or 5 coats of varnish on top of it. it won't be near as durable as plexi, but you won't abuse it like in an arcade anyway. just be sure to test the varnish (polyurthane is even better) on the graphics first to make sure it doesn't disolve the ink you use.
