Definitely no break-in period, something is not right with the innards of the trackball. Easy to fix though, just open it up with a philips screwdriver (right side up and close to a large, flat surface, don't want to drop and lose any parts!) and make sure everything is where it should be.

My imperial trackball was very easy to figure out once opened, very few moving parts. Mine was also kinda sticky when I first got it; basically I just pulled out all the parts and put them back in perfectly; some things either were knocked out of alignment during shipping, or were never put together correctly. Works like a dream now.
