If I was going to sink the faceplate into a control panel that was already built, I'd use a chisel and a hammer, or a friggin swiss army knife... :-/

I would DEFINITELY spend like 2 hours CARVING a space for the faceplate than 10 seconds totally messing up my control panel, and have to spend COUNTLESS hours building a new one. :)

Just my $.02 :)

: : If I want to install the trackball onto a ¾’ thick wood control panel, how is the trackball face plate installed in?

: When I built my spinner/track panel I got in a hurry and didn't flush mount it. I figured that I would be upset with the results and end up redoing it but now I really don't see any problems with having the plate a little higher than the formica. If I were doing it over (and really wanted to sink it) I would probably use a router and sink it into the formica. You would have to be really careful (which is another reason I didn't redo it) because one slip and you would have to scrap the entire panel and start from scratch.
