The HotRod is a fine stick. Have you checked out the reviews? Mostly what you saw on StickIt's site is hype, and I'm pretty sure they are out of business. I will update the FAQ to so indicate shortly... Lack of programability is not too significant an issue as most emulators and games allow you to assign the control keys. There are also utilities you can try when your program doesn't allow reprogramming itself.
Another option is the OzStick, and if you keep your ears open there are a couple of things coming down the pipeline shortly :) You'll see them on the news page!

I really want it to work with RAINE, MAME, CALLUS, CONSOLE emus, etc.....PC games..everything...just need to be sure...if not WHAT ONE SHOULD I BUY?? AND WHERE???
