: So, instead of using smartdrv I should run CWSDPMI? When you run it from 98 CWSDPMI just needs to reside in the same directory of mame, do I need to run it in my autoexec.bat? Do you have a copy of your autoexec and config.sys you could mail me? dhansen111@home.com

You dont use CWSDPMI *instead* of SMARTDRV because they are 2 completely different things: SMARTDRV is a disk caching program used to speed-up disk access, while CWSDPMI is a DOS Protected Mode Memory provider (this is the type of memory MAME etc. needs to work). I think u got confused when i mentioned that CWSDPMI uses a swap-file (just forget I mentioned it :)

You dont have to specifically load CWSDPMI from autoexec.bat! Programs like MAME look for then load CWSDPMI automatically when you run them. Just leave the CWSDPMI files in the MAME directory.

I assume you're using SMARTDRV to speed things up using the AOS front end. I dont use AOS at the mo, which is why I said I also dont use SMARTDRV. You do use AOS, however, so also keep using SMARTDRV!

As for my config & autoexec, there's nothing else I use relevent to you in them, so - to recap - just make sure your config.sys has the following lines in, and in this order:

DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS NOVCPI

Let me know if this cuts-out any disk access slowdown you may get when running the larger ROMS.

Good luck
