Mame uses its own h and v timings for each resolution, so even though you have AOS working, the job has just begun.

In the mame.cfg file, you will find a list of resolutions. The ones that you need to concern yourself with are the ones that end with 'arc' (ie 320x240arc). I recommend starting with this resolution, since it seems to yield the greatest quantity of playable games right out the gate.

Firstly, set the default AOS resolution to 320x240 in the AOS defaults control panel. Next, adjust the vsync until there is no visible roll. This should be unnecessary in your case, since I'm guessing by the way that you described the problem that the issue is largely the h-sync, since you didn't say that the problem was with rolling. Adjust the value by ones or twos. You'll know that you're getting closer when the screen gets more identifiable. I've had resolutions that have needed to be adjusted both upward and downward, although downward seemed to be more common.

You have another option: Advancemame. Its probably likely that you'll end up using it anyways, but I recommend that you tune in at least one key resolution with standard mame before doing so. I find that I use both Advancemame and regular mame, because advancemame seems to want to fart around with my basic tried-and-true resolutions, while regular mame doesnt give me the flexibility with vertical games that I want.

A good game to test against is any with a resolution at or near (preferrably at) 320x240. I can't think of one off of the top of my head, but I used bubble bobble for that testing.

I hope this helps.
