KE72 problem

I have a KE72 problem. In some games the input is very erratic and jerky. For example, I play Donkey Kong, and Mario will move to the right a couple of pixels, then stop, then jerk forward a little more...

This only happens with "player 2" controls, so far in MAME, Z26, and RockNES. Player 1 works fine. And I'm pretty sure it's not my wiring job at fault, because I've reprogrammed the KE72 to have player 2's controls do player 1 and vice versa. In that case, player 2's controls control player 1 just fine, but the player 2 input is still messed up with the known-good controls.

I've also tested all connections with a multi-meter and when I assign letters to the controls, I can get all the letters reliably in a text editor.

Playing the games works fine with the keyboard so it's probably not the software.

I get the same problem running on my Celeron 400/Win98 and a P133/Win95 in either GUI mode or "DOS mode" so it's probably not a quirk with my machine or with Windows.

Any ideas before I send the KE72 back?

I think the main problem is that the programs don't see the KE72 as a "regular" keyboard, but I don't know what to change to solve that.

Thanks...
