I'm using the current versions of both AOS and Mame in pure DOS and have no problems...I did have problems with the older versions of AOS but found that they were mostly due to older config files.
I simply installed the newer version of aos in a new folder and reconfiged it from a fresh unzip and it works great. Do the same with MAME and you should be okay.
There are a lot of good games that have been added since .36!
