: Hello all-
: I'm converting an old Victory Road game to play Mame games. I want to connect my pc video out directly to the arcade monitor. I've read many of the posts here but I'm still confused (that doesn't take much!). I have several questions that I hope you all can answer for this confused fellow in the US!
: 1) Do I need to "downconvert" the scan rates from my PC?

You cannot just pump a regular PC signal to an arcade monitor. So yes you need to lower the frequency sent to the monitor.

: 2)Does my PC video card need to have NTSC capabilities out (because the one I'm using doesn't). If it needs to have NTSC out is there a converter that will work?

Your video card does not have to have NTSC out to use it, but if you have one that will work. See below.

: 3)Does my PC video card need to have RGB out (becasue the one I'm using doesn't). If it needs to have RGB out is there a converter that will work?

: 4)If there is a converter that will do all of the above, can I run Windows and have it display on the arcade monitor?

: 5)If I can't run Windows do I need to run DOS Mame? And if I have to run DOS Mame will the ROM files from the Windows Mame work with it?

The roms are the same.

: 6)Will the AVERKey do all of the above? I have found that online for only $85 but I can't tell if that will "downconvert" the signal.

The averkey will is and external NTSC converter... it will work but some ppl dont like the picture they provide.

You can, however use most video cards and drive an arcade monitor by wiring it correctly and using software to send a correct video signal. First you have to wire it by connecting the red, green, blue, ground, vert sync, and horiz sync to the monitor from your video card.... you can see my page and the link at the bottom to see how i did it.

Then you have basically 2 choices.

1) use arcadeos in DOS and use it to send a arcade monitor video signal to you monitor. This is done by setting incabinet=1 in the arcadeos.cfg file. this will also set it for all mame games you play.

2) use a program like vsyncmame or mon-arc or advance mame that can set the correct video signal in your startup files so everything works with the arcade monitor. you may be able to set a signal that works for window with this setup.

Either way, be prepared to fiddle a lot to get it to work. Some ppl dont like to use an arcade monitor because it can be limit what you can do and is a lot of work. I think the picture is well worth the effort.

: I really would like to do this using hardware as opposed to software. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

: Thanks in advance-
: WT
