I purchased a handy little device called a Whymouse. It is a Y adapter that attaches to the serial port. (It gets its power from the keyboard port.)
On one side plug in the trackball, on the other side plug in the spinner.
The Whymouse automatically "reads" and "activates" the control that is being used. You switch devices by simply touching or spinning the control you want for two seconds.
The cheapest I found was $44.95.
