: It occurs to me that all my responses have been in the context of MAME. Are you using this controller for MAME? If not, then some of this won't apply.

I'd say 90% Mame/Raine and 10% other. Other being the odd PC game, ok make that 5%...

: Again, if it's for a stand alone cabinet project, then you'll need more keys. Escape is required in order to exit the current game and go back to the interface, for example.

It's just going to be a stand alone controller. This is my first attempt at such a project. It's
my goal to use this as a learning project. If all goes well then I'm going to build a full cabinet.

: TAB is useful in MAME to change or review control settings, dip switches, etc.

: I've never understood the need for multiple coin buttons... If you need two credits, press the "Coin 1" button twice. Are there games that tie coin switches to player positions?

I agree, it's cosmettic only, albeit usable. I was playing around with using one of the other button types for coins. Happ do some square ones, but nothing grabs me so I'll probably just stick with the standard pushbutton. Got any ideas here?

: Pause? You gotta have Pause! The phone rings, you need another beer, etc.

mmm this is where I have to fess up, I did'nt even
know mame had a pause !! I've been playing around with mame since it's first version as well. Ok, I know, I should read the readme file !! but who ever does..... I'm going to be sitting in Visio
tonight and will play around with adding some new buttons.

: : SHIFT button, what do you think?

: Gotta have it... but you already do. The I-PAC's uses the 1 Player start as SHIFT.

Ok, cool, one less button...

: : I'll play around with the design, if your interested, I could email you my visio diagram. I'd be greatful for any further input or advice.

: Put it on the Net and post the link in a separate message... there are others here much more experienced than I who would probably comment.

I will post it, once I feel it won't get laughed at ! Thanks GAP, you've been a real help. I'll let you know what I decide.
